Happy St Piran’s Day!

 Happy St Piran’s Day!

In my native Cornwall they celebrate St Piran’s Day on March 5th... Usually with lots feasting on lovely things like hevva cake, saffron buns and pasties; and a march across the countryside from the village of Perranzabuloe to the sand dunes at Penhale where St Piran’s cross stands.

We could all learn a few lessons from St Piran about triumph over adversity, the poor chap left his native Ireland under a could in the 6th century when he was tied to a millstone and thrown over a cliff into the sea. Luckily for the Cornish, his millstone floated across the sea to Perranporth.
Later on, after establishing an oratory at Perranporth, it was engulfed by the migrating dune system and had to be moved. Most significantly for the Cornish though, St Piran rediscovered the lost art of smelting tin, when molten metal bubbled forth from his hearth stone.

GIS Kitty:

We have a ‘Hello Kitty’ already, but now we have a ‘GIS Kitty’ too! I’m trying to develop my subject knowledge in GIS at the moment, and I was very kindly lent a book by ‘Dr M.’ It’s funny because even though I borrowed the book last Friday,  I haven’t had a look in yet as Twilight loves it. Let’s hope that no one tells our Vice Chancellor, David Maguire, he might be a bit upset to find that one of his biggest fans is a cat!

In spite of my (part Canadian) cultural heritage, I had never heard this song until it was played on Radio 2 last Saturday, and I can safely say that it is one of the funniest I have ever heard. It tells the story of a man trying to buy a second hand truck... If you are feeling brave you could check out this fun version on youtube:

Enjoy! Jerushah X
